Debate: Europe after the Fall of the Berlin Wall
The European Movement the Netherlands, the National Liberation Museum in Groesbeek and the websites www.europa-nu.nl and www.heeleuropa.nl of the PDC The Hague are organising a student debate on the developments after the Fall of the Berlin Wall, 20 years ago.
Which opportunities have been seized and which have been missed? Which expectations have come true and which expectations have not been fulfilled?
An expert panel will debate with each other and with youngsters from various European countries.
This debate will be held on November 18th at 7.30 p.m. at the Radboud University in Nijmegen, Collegezalen Complex.
Who will participate in our panel of experts?
- Arie Oostlander: former member of the European Parliament (1989-2004) for the Christen-Democrates. Moreover he is a former reporter for the European Parliament for ‘The strategy for expanding the EU’
- Wim van Meurs: political historian at the Radboud University
- Bruno van den Elshout: travelled through Eastern-Europe, interviewed many youngsters about their personal experiences and compiled the book ‘Crossroad Europe
- Moderator – Malgorzata Bos-Karczewska – Dutch-Polish journalist, editor-in-chief of Polonia.NL website of the Polish Community in the Netherlands
Furthermore, youngsters attending the official commemoration of the fall of the wall at the European Parliament and a youngster from the former East-German Republic, will be present.

Studentendebat over de val van de Muur in Nijmegen – (in English)
Zijn de kansen na de val van de Muur benut en in hoeverre zijn de verwachtingen die mensen hadden uitgekomen?
Een panel van deskundigen zal met elkaar en met jongeren uit verschillende Europese landen in debat gaan.
Panelleden:
- Arie Oostlander – voormalig Europarlementariër in de periode 1989-2004 en rapporteur voor 'De strategie voor de uitbreiding van de EU’
- Wim van Meurs – politiek historicus verbonden aan de Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen
- Bruno van den Elshout – reisde door Oost-Europa, interviewde jongeren over hun persoonlijke ervaringen en stelde het boek Crossroad Europe samen, vaste columnist van de Europese jongerensite HeelEuropa.nl.
Debatleider:
- Malgorzata Bos-Karczewska – de Pools-Nederlandse journaliste, hoofdredacteur Polonia.NL, website van de Poolse Gemeenschap in Nederland
Een aantal jongeren uit verschillende Europese landen, waaronder iemand uit de voormalige DDR, nemen deel aan het debat.
Het publiek krijgt nadrukkelijk de mogelijkheid om mee doen aan het debat.
Na afloop is het mogelijk een drankje te drinken in het Cultuurcafé op de campus van de Universiteit Nijmegen.
