Z inicjatywy Sir Briana Urquharta i brytyjskich weteranów spod Arnhem, 16 września br. w Driel o godz. 15-tej − w ramach 62. rocznicy obchodów bitwy pod Arnhem − odbędzie się uroczyste odsłonięcie pomnika generała Sosabowskiego.
Dwa lata temu, Sir Brian Urquhart podczas uroczystości z okazji z 60. rocznicy bitwy pod Arnhem rozpoczął brytyjską akcję przywracania chwały generałowi Sosabowskiemu i jego Brygadzie.
Sir Brian Urquhart KCMG (Knight Commander of St Michael and St George), jest prezesem stowarzyszenia „Major General Stanisław Sosabowski Memorial Appeal”, które powstało celem przywrócenia chwały generałowi Sosabowskiemu i Brygadzie.
W apelu Stowarzyszenia czytamy: „Nasza inicjatywa ma charakter bardziej osobisty, jest to wyraz uznania ze strony Brytyjskich Sił Powietrznodesantowych dla Polskich Spadochroniarzy(…), dla generała Sosabowskiego i jego wspaniałych polskich spadochroniarzy bez których odwagi i ducha walki odziały 1st Airborne Division nie miały szans wycofać się spod Arnhem”. Pomnik generała Sosabowskiego wykonala znana angielska rzeźbiarka Vivien Mallock, (www.vivienmallock.co.uk/publicsculptures/index.htm). Jej dziełem jest również pomnik „Monty’ego” – Montgomerego – we Francji w miejscowości Colleville Montgomery, gdzie 6 czerwca 1944 r. wylądowała 3 Brytyjska Dywizja Piechoty.
Kto to jest major Brian Urquhart?
We wrześniu 1944, oficer wywiadu major Brian Urquhart był członkiem grupy dowódczej
generała Browninga. Generał Browning był odpowiedzialny za stworzenie i wykonanie operacji Market-Garden, raportował bezpośrednio do gen. Montgomerego, autora pomysłu operacji Market-Garden.
To właśnie Brian Urquhart osobiście ostrzegł Browninga, że plan Market-Garden jest
nie do wykonania ze względu na obecność 2 pancernych dywizji niemieckich na miejscu lądowania. Major Urquhart polecał wstrzymanie operacji. Odpowiedzią Browninga był natychmiastowy rozkaz wysłanie Majora Urquharta na leczenie zdrowotne a zdjęcia wywiadu pokazujące ukryte dywizje niemieckie poszły do szuflady. Operacja Market-Garden rozpoczęła się. Po wojnie major Urquhart zrobił wspaniałą karierę, między innymi był wieloletnim Sekretarzem ONZ, a dziś jest prezesem Stowarzyszenia „Major General Stanisław Sosabowski Memorial Appeal”.
3. Major General Stanislaw Sosabowski Memorial Appeal
Before the Battle of Arnhem, Major Brian Urquhart, a brilliant young Intelligence Officer on the staff of General Browning warned that his plan for the battle was unworkable. When Urquhart stood his ground, Browning had him sent away. That young man went on to become Under Secretary General of the United Nations and now Sir Brian Urquhart KCMG MBE is President of the “Major General Stanislaw Sosabowski Memorial Appeal”.
After the battle, Browning dismissed Brigadier Sosabowski, the Commander of the Polish Parachute Brigade. This act, as unjustified as it was disgraceful, caused lasting resentment and bitterness amongst the gallant Polish troops who fought and died beside us at Arnhem.
The name of Stanislaw Sosabowski stands high in the pantheon of hero-patriots who devoted their lives to fighting for the freedom of their beloved Poland. Born in 1892 he was fighting the Austrians in 1910,and against the Russians from 1913 to 1919. By 1939 he was commanding a Polish Regiment and played an epic role in the defence of Warsaw against overwhelming German Forces till Poland surrendered. Captured, he escaped via the Black Sea to France where he was given command of the infantry in the 4th Polish Division and fought alongside the French until they surrendered. He then led his men to the Channel coast and took them to England where he formed and trained the 1st Polish Parachute Brigade. General Sosabowski was a Polish icon long before he came to the UK.
After his dismissal by Browning, Sosabowski was demobilised. He brought out of Poland to England his only son who had been blinded in the Warsaw uprising. The Soviet installed Government in Warsaw deprived Sosabowski of his citizenship and pension. He died in poverty in the UK in 1967 aged 75.
In 2004 Sir Brian Urquhart flew to Arnhem and launched the campaign to restore the honour of Stanislaw Sosabowski and of his Polish Brigade. This year, the Queen of the Netherlands presented to Sosabowski’s grandsons the posthumous award of the “Bronze Lion” and at the same time bestow the “Military Willemsorde” (which is equivalent to the British VC) as a unit award to the Polish Parachute Brigade. This is the first and only time such an award has been made and is the highest recognition the Dutch can make.
We applaud this generous act. Our own recognition will be more personal, as from the British Airborne Forces to the Polish Airborne Forces. The object of our Appeal, is to raise a fund for a memorial to Major General Stanslaw Sosabowski to be erected in the Polish Square in Driel. It will be a bas-relief bronze plaque mounted on a stone column and will stand as a permanent testament of the admiration and gratitude which we hold for Major General Stanislaw Sosabowski and for our gallant Polish comrades, without whose courage and fighting spirit, the remnants of the 1st British Airborne Division could not have escaped.
We have placed an order for the memorial (designed by the famous sculptor Vivien Mallock) to be ready for unveiling on 16 September 2006, to coincide with the annual Polish Reunion in Driel. We hope that as many as possible of the Arnhem Veterans of the British and Polish units and their relatives and descendants can meet together in Driel this year to honour the memory of the 1st Independent Polish Parachute Brigade and of a great Polish Hero.
