Zwierzchnik Kościoła katolickiego Anglii i Walii, abp Westminsteru kardynał Cormac Murphy-O’Connor zaapelował do polskich imigrantów, by czynnie włączali się w życie parafii katolickich na Wyspach – pisze tygodnik „The Sunday Telegraph”.
W przeciwnym razie – obawia się abp Westminsteru – Kościół katolicki w Wlk. Brytanii podzieli się wzdłuż linii narodowych, etnicznych i językowych.
– Niepokoi mnie to, iż Polacy tworzą w Wlk. Brytanii odrębny Kościół. Chciałbym, by byli częścią życia miejscowego Kościoła katolickiego – cytuje arcybiskupa tygodnik.
– Mam nadzieję, że duchowni odpowiedzialni za polski Kościół w Wlk. Brytanii, jak też sami Polacy uświadomią sobie, że powinni włączyć się w życie lokalnych parafii tak szybko, jak się da, gdy tylko ich angielski im to umożliwi – powiedział kard. Murphy-O’Connor.
Rzecznik kardynała oświadczył, że zależy mu na owocnej współpracy z polskim duszpasterstwem. – Jest on przekonany, że polska społeczność wnosi duży wkład do życia Kościoła w Wlk. Brytanii i że bliższa współpraca uczyniłaby ten wkład jeszcze bardziej skutecznym – podkreślił rzecznik.
„Modlitwa po polsku to przecież nie grzech”. – Kardynał nie może od nas oczekiwać, że (jako Polacy) przestaniemy się modlić po polsku, to przecież nie jest grzechem – mówi Grażyna Sikorska, asystent rektora Polskiej Misji Katolickiej w Anglii i Walii.
W ocenie rektora PMK, księdza prałata Tadeusza Kukli, polski Kościół jest bardzo ważnym wyznacznikiem polskiej tożsamości narodowej. – Jeśli Polacy stracą narodową tożsamość, to stracą wszystko – zaznacza.
Wyniki badań opublikowane w ubiegłym tygodniu wskazują, że napływ imigrantów z katolickich krajów Europy Centralnej i Wschodniej, zwłaszcza Polaków, spowodował, że w 2006 r. średnia liczba katolików uczestniczących regularnie w niedzielnej mszy św. przewyższyła liczbę anglikanów. Ponieważ jednak modlą się oni osobno w swoim języku, to ich napływ nie przekłada się na liczebny wzrost miejscowych parafii.
PMK w Anglii i Walii jest właścicielem 30 kościołów, 12 kaplic i 55 ośrodków parafialnych, w których prowadzone jest duszpasterstwo. Nabożeństwa odprawia się także w kościołach angielskich. 99 polskich kapłanów świadczy posługę duszpasterską dla 204 polskich ośrodków w Anglii i Walii.
Na czele PMK stoi rektor mianowany przez Episkopat Polski w porozumieniu z Episkopatem Anglii i Walii, z uprawnieniami wikariusza delegata dla Polaków. Ten status jest jedynym tego rodzaju w duszpasterstwie poza granicami Polski w świecie.

The leader of the country’s Roman Catholics has sparked a row by accusing immigrants of creating a separate church in Britain.
Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, the Archbishop of Westminster, urged the Polish community to do more to learn English and integrate into local parishes, claiming the Catholic Church in the UK was in danger of dividing along ethnic lines as the number of Polish-speaking churches rose.
Leading Polish community figures said they felt „violated” and „spiritually raped” by his words and called for talks on the issue.
New research, revealed last week by The Sunday Telegraph, shows that an influx of eastern Europeans boosts numbers attending Mass above those at Church of England Sunday services.
The research ended a momentous week which saw Tony Blair formally convert to Catholicism, while official figures to be released in the new year will show a rise in Mass attendance in 2006.
The number of churchgoers fell 40 per cent between 1963 and 1991, but the arrival of immigrants from Catholic countries in eastern Europe halted the decline and led to an increase in weekly Mass attendance from 917,500 in 2005 to 927,154 last year.
However, Cardinal Murphy-O’Connor said: „I’m quite concerned that the Poles are creating a separate church in Britain. I would want them to be part of the Catholic life of this country.
„I would hope those responsible for the Polish church here, and the Poles themselves, will be aware that they should become a part of local parishes as soon as possible when they learn enough of the language.”
Despite the archbishop’s also using his Christmas message to appeal to the nation to be more welcoming to immigrants, Grazyna Sikorska, of the Polish Catholic Mission for England and Wales, said the community had been upset.
She told the Catholic newspaper The Tablet: „How can he demand that we stop praying in Polish? Is it a sin? I feel my inner conscience has been violated, leaving me spiritually raped.”
Fr Tadeusz Kukla, the vicar-delegate for Poles in England and Wales, said: „If we lose our national identity, we lose everything.” A spokesman for Cardinal Murphy-O’Connor said the archbishop was keen to work with the Polish chaplaincy. „He believes the Polish community contributes greatly to the Church in this country, but closer collaboration would make it even more effective.”

3. Britse kardinaal boos op Poolse migranten
LONDEN (RKnieuws.net) – De rooms-katholieke aartsbisschop van Westminster, kardinaal Cormac Murphy O’Connor, heeft Poolse immigranten ervan beschuldigd te streven naar een eigen Poolse Rooms-Katholieke Kerk in het Verenigd Koninkrijk.
Volgens de Poolse radio vindt O’Connor dat Poolse betrokkenheid bij Engelstalige missen cruciaal is voor de eenheid van de Rooms-Katholieke Kerk in het Verenigd Koninkrijk.De kerk kan extra mensen goed gebruiken. Uit onderzoek blijkt dat zondags hooguit 900.000 Britten een rooms-katholieke kerk bezoeken. Dat is ongeveer evenveel als in de Anglicaanse Kerk.
„Ik ben bezorgd over het feit dat Polen hun eigen kerk willen vormen in het Verenigd Koninkrijk”, aldus O’Connor. „Ik heb liever dat zij deel uitmaken van de katholieke gemeenschap in dit land.”
Tot grote ergernis van Polen riep de kardinaal de immigranten op „betrokken te raken bij locale Engelse parochies, zodra zij de taal leren.” Dat leidde tot woedende reacties van in Groot-Brittannië woonachtige Poolse kerkleden en priesters. „Hoe durft hij te eisen dat wij moeten stoppen met het bidden in het Pools”, schrijft Grazyna Sikorska, verbonden aan de Poolse Katholieke Missie in Engeland en Wales, in het rooms-katholieke weekblad The Tablet. „Is het zonde om in het Pools te bidden?”
De ongeveer 1 miljoen Polen in het Verenigd Koninkrijk hebben ook hun eigen bier, winkels en media. Volgens de deken van de Poolse Katholieke Missie, priester Tadeusz Kukla, is er dus niets mis met een igen kerk, omdat die belangrijk is voor de toekomst van Poolse immigranten. „Als Polen hun nationale identiteit verliezen, zullen zij alles verliezen.”
