Drodzy Rodacy,
Wśród naszych niderlandzkich przyjaciół, w obecności najwyższych władz Królestwa Niderlandów oraz korpusu dyplomatycznego, poszukuję właściwych słów, by móc wyrazić emocje, które towarzyszyły nam, Polakom, w ciągu tych kilku dni, które minęły od tragicznej soboty, 10 kwietnia. Smutek, żal, niedowierzanie, gorycz, rozpacz – te słowa to za mało, by opisać to, co dzieje się w sercach ludzi, którzy każdego dnia przychodzą pod budynek Ambasady Polskiej w Hadze, by ofiarować kwiaty i zapalać znicze. W ciszy składają oni pod opuszczoną polską flagą ostatni, anonimowy hołd ofiarom przerażającej katastrofy samolotu rządowego, który rozbił się pod Smoleńskiem, na terenie Rosji.
Katastrofa pochłonęła 96 istnień ludzkich. Zginął Prezydent Rzeczpospolitej Polskiej Lech Kaczyński, Jego Małżonka, Ryszard Kaczorowski – ostatni Prezydent RP na uchodźstwie, Wicemarszałkowie Sejmu, Wicemarszałek Senatu, Przedstawiciele Polskich Sił Zbrojnych, Rzecznik Praw Obywatelskich, Prezes Narodowego Banku Polskiego, 18 posłów i senatorów. Śmierć poniósł były Ambasador Polski w Królestwie Niderlandów, Stanisław Komorowski. Zginęło wielu znanych, cenionych polityków, duchownych, urzędników i innych osób cieszących się prestiżem społecznym. Wobec śmierci wszyscy okazali się równi. Wszyscy pozostawili swoich bliskich w bólu i głębokiej żałobie, ku którym kierujemy słowa serdecznego współczucia.
Tragedia, która rozegrała się pod Smoleńskiem ma wymiar nie tylko indywidualny, jest to bowiem dramat całego Narodu. Polska została osierocona przez swoich przywódców. Zginęli współtwórcy polskiej demokracji, współzałożyciele największych obecnie partii politycznych, doświadczeni i wysoce wykwalifikowani pracownicy administracji publicznej. Wśród ofiar znaleźli się także bohaterowie XX-wiecznej, wytrwałej walki o wolność Polski – powstaniec warszawski Major Zbigniew Dębski i działaczka Solidarności Anna Walentynowicz. Śmierć każdej z tych osób z osobna byłaby bolesnym ciosem dla Narodu Polskiego, tymczasem – straciliśmy ich wszystkich w jednej chwili.
W ciągu ostatnich 20 lat My, Polacy, ciężką i cierpliwą pracą zbudowaliśmy nową Polskę. Polskę, o której marzyli nasi dziadkowie walczący o wolność w czasie II wojny światowej i rodzice, egzystujący pod komunistycznym jarzmem. Dzisiaj Polska to demokratyczne państwo prawa o stabilnej gospodarce i liczący się aktor sceny międzynarodowej. Polacy to naród ambitny i pracowity. Cieszymy się, że możemy pomnażać swój dobrobyt i budować sprawnie funkcjonujące państwo w warunkach wolności i demokracji.
Dlaczego jednak przydarza nam się ta straszna tragedia? Dlaczego los po raz kolejny tak boleśnie nas doświadcza?
Katyń jest dla Polaków symbolem śmierci od 1940 r. Od 1940 r. Polacy starają się opowiedzieć światu o dramacie, który ich spotkał. O 22 tysiącach oficerów polskich i innych członkach polskiej elity intelektualnej, którzy zostali zamordowani przez radzieckie służby bezpieczeństwa. Celem intrygi, która doprowadziła do zbiorowego mordu, było pozbawienie Polski jej najlepszych dowódców, intelektualistów, ludzi poważanych przez społeczeństwo.
Ci, którzy dziwią się, że wydarzenie sprzed 70 lat może być tak żywo obecne w świadomości współczesnych Polaków, nie wiedzą zapewne, że o historii Katynia wolno nam opowiadać światu dopiero od roku 1989. Pragnęliśmy, żeby świat poznał tę historię. Pragnął tego gorliwie Prezydent Lech Kaczyński, podobnie jak członkowie delegacji, która w sobotę udała się do Smoleńska na uroczyste obchody 70-lecia Zbrodni Katyńskiej. 10 kwietnia 2010 r. wspomnienie tragedii sprzed 70 lat pojawiło się we wszystkich dziennikach świata. Czy potrzebna była ofiara życia tak wielu osób?
Prezydent Lech Kaczyński podczas sobotniej uroczystości na Polskim Cmentarzu Wojennym w Katyniu miał wypowiedzieć słowa: ,,My, Polacy, doceniamy działania Rosjan z ostatnich lat. Tą drogą, która zbliża nasze narody, powinniśmy iść dalej, nie zatrzymując się na niej, ani nie cofając”. W obliczu tragedii, zarówno władze Federacji Rosyjskiej, jak i obywatele Rosji spełnili to niewypowiedziane przesłanie Prezydenta oferując Polakom szczególne wsparcie, nie tylko organizacyjne i logistyczne, lecz przede wszystkim duchowe. Jesteśmy wdzięczni.
Dziękujemy za wsparcie władz Królestwa Niderlandów, przychylną postawę mediów oraz wyrazy współczucia, które docierają do nas od obywateli goszczącego nas państwa. W obliczu tej strasznej tragedii, dla nas nie mogących dzielić bólu z rodakami w Polsce, te gesty duchowej jedności znaczą bardzo wiele. Dziękujemy. Dziękujemy również za te tulipany, których odmianę nazwano imieniem Marii Kaczyńskiej.
Wstrząsająca katastrofa, która wydarzyła się pod Smoleńskiem 10 kwietnia 2010 r. na zawsze będzie stanowić jedną z najczarniejszych kart historii Polski, wpisując się jako mistyczny symbol w filozofię dziejów Państwa Polskiego.
Oddajemy wspólnie hołd Ofiarom tego tragicznego zdarzenia i łączymy się we wspólnej modlitwie. Cześć Ich pamięci!

Ambassadeur Stanczyk, excellenties, dames en heren,
De harde klap die zaterdag klonk in Smolensk heeft Polen in het hart geraakt. Op weg naar de herdenking van een van de zwartste bladzijden uit de bewogen Poolse geschiedenis verloren President Lech Kaczyński, zijn echtgenote en nog zoveel andere prominente landgenoten het leven in een catastrofale vliegramp. Het is bijna niet te bevatten wat deze ramp voor Polen en het Poolse volk betekent.
Namens de Nederlandse regering wil ik u zeggen dat wij intens met u meeleven. Nederland is één in zijn verdriet met het Poolse volk. Nederland is één met de grote Poolse gemeenschap in ons land. Uiteraard zijn onze gedachten vandaag in de eerste plaats bij de nabestaanden van de slachtoffers. In het besef dat woorden het verlies niet goed kunnen maken, wil ik vanaf deze plaats tegen hen zeggen: uw verdriet is ons verdriet. Uw pijn is onze pijn. En uw verbijstering is onze verbijstering.
Ik kende president Kaczyński persoonlijk. Hij zal altijd in mijn herinnering blijven als een markant en gepassioneerd staatsman. Ik heb deze dagen vaak teruggedacht aan de hartelijke ontvangst op het presidentieel paleis tijdens mijn tweedaagse bezoek aan Polen in het voorjaar van 2008. President Kaczyński sprak daar, als altijd, met vuur over de plaats van Polen in Europa en de wereld. Wat hem ten diepste dreef, was zijn grote liefde voor Polen en een onverzettelijke vrijheidsdrang. Al in de jaren ’80 zette hij zich binnen Solidarność succesvol in voor daadwerkelijke vrijheid en onafhankelijkheid. Zijn strijd voor waarheidsvinding en erkenning van de gebeurtenissen bij Katyn verdient onze blijvende bewondering. Het is een wrange speling van het lot dat hij juist op weg naar de herdenking van dit drama om het leven kwam.
Persoonlijke herinneringen heb ik ook aan zijn echtgenote, mevrouw Maria Kaczyńska, een vrouw die in onze gedachten blijft vanwege haar tolerantie, eerlijkheid en onafhankelijke oordeel. Zij was niet alleen haar man tot steun, maar de hele Poolse natie. Haar bijdrage aan de herwonnen vrijheid maakte haar geliefd en gerespecteerd. Ook buiten de landsgrenzen.
En zo verloor Polen vorige week zaterdag met één harde klap 96 mensen. Mensen die hun land vol overtuiging dienden en nabestaanden van de slachtoffers uit Katyn. Onder hen waren de laatste president van de Republiek Polen in ballingschap, de militaire legertop, de voorzitter van de nationale bank, de nationale ombudsman en een aantal parlementariërs. Hen allen gedenken wij met diep respect. Onder hen was ook Stanisław Komorowski, die van 1994 tot 1998 in Den Haag was geplaatst als ambassadeur. Zijn bijzondere bijdrage aan de Pools-Nederlandse betrekkingen zal nooit vergeten worden.
Ik las eerder deze week een uitspraak van Lech Walesa die mij trof. ‘Het zal nog lang duren voordat de wonden van onze democratie geheeld zijn’, zei hij. Ik geloof dat hij daarmee heel treffend de diepe pijn verwoordde die veel Polen deze dagen moeten voelen.
Tegelijkertijd mag Polen hoop en vertrouwen hebben. Hoop die niet mooier kon worden gesymboliseerd dan in de oprechte en ontroerende omhelzing van premier Tusk en premier Poetin op de rampplek. Dat beeld staat op mijn netvlies gebrand. En vertrouwen in de veerkracht van het Poolse volk en in de steun van vrienden om u heen. Uw land ligt stevig verankerd in het hart van Europa en Nederland is één van die vrienden. Dus weet dat wij voor u klaar staan, zoals de Poolse bevrijders ooit voor Nederland klaarstonden in de laatste fase van de Tweede Wereldoorlog.
Ik wens u, al uw landgenoten en vooral alle nabestaanden veel kracht toe bij de verwerking van dit grote verlies. Nederland rouwt met u mee. Polacy jesteśmy z Wami. (Polen, wij zijn met jullie.)

Szanowni Państwo! Kochani Rodacy w Holandii!
Dziś tu z dala od Ojczyzny, w Hadze, na mszy żałobnej oddajemy hołd wszystkim ofiarom tragedii: Prezydentowi RP Panu Lechowi Kaczyńskiemu, Pierwszej Damie, posłom, dowódcom Wojska Polskiego, szefom ważnych państwowych instytucji, księżom i rodzinom oficerów zamordowanych w 1940 r. w Katyniu. Łączymy się we wspólnej modlitwie w ich intencji.
Jesteśmy wstrząśnięci niewyobrażalną tragedią, jaka dotknęła nasz kraj. Trudno znaleźć odpowiednie słowa, by oddać to, co czujemy.
Ciężko nam wszystkim pojąć, że tylu wspaniałych, wybitnych, prawych Rodaków odeszło w jednej chwili w tak ważnym już wcześniej dla nas Polaków miejscu. Co za tragiczny bieg historii!
Nasze serca są pełne smutku i bólu. Każdy z nas chciałby być teraz w kraju, wśród rodziny – u siebie. Wielu z nas wywiesiło flagę polską, zapaliło świeczki, złożyło kwiaty przed ambasadą i także w innych miejscach, modliło się w polskich kościołach w Holandii.
Dziś będąc razem tu, w Hadze, chcemy znaleźć ukojenie dla naszego bólu, łącząc się we wspólnej modlitwie do Boga Wszechmogącego. Chcemy być razem, razem z obecnymi gośćmi – przedstawicielami Jej Królewskiej Mości Królowej Beatrix, rządu Holandii, holenderskiego parlamentu, korpusu dyplomatycznego i obywatelami tego kraju, aby oddać hołd ofiarom katastrofy – byłym aktywistom Solidarności i patriotom, którzy w służbie Ojczyzny złożyli najwyższą z możliwych ofiarę.
Mamy poczucie, że Holendrzy są z nami w tej trudnej chwili. Wielkim wsparciem duchowym są dla nas słowa współczucia i sympatii wyrażone osobiście, telefonicznie, w mailach, które wielu z nas otrzymało nie tylko od naszych holenderskich rodzin, przyjaciół, sąsiadów, ale również od nieznanych Holendrów i obywateli innych narodowości.
Nasz rodak z Arnhem opowiedział mi o spotkaniu w miniony poniedziałek przed szkołą jego córki. Jedna z matek odprowadzająca swoje dzieci do szkoły Natasza, Rosjanka z Moskwy, płacząc, spontanicznie złożyła na jego ręce wyrazy współczucia wszystkim Polakom.
W niedzielę pod ambasadą RP spotkałam Niemca, mieszkańca Hagi, który na ogrodzeniu nakleił pierwszą stronę gazety niemieckiej ze zdjęciem rozbitego samolotu z nagłówkiem „Unser Nachbarland unter Schock. Polen, wir weinen mit Dir! („Nasz sąsiad w szoku. Polsko, płaczemy z Tobą!”). Wśród morza kwiatów złożonych pod ambasadą było kilka szczególnych – dwa bukiety ze wstęgą w barwach Rosji i jeden od węgierskich przyjaciół.
To all of you, our friends: Dank u wel!, Danke Schoen!, Cпасибо!, Köszönöm szépen!, Thank you!
Mam głęboką nadzieję, że duch wspólnotowości, solidarności i szczerej ludzkiej przyjaźni, który nami teraz zawładnął – pozostanie na trwale z nami i w nas. To byłby najcenniejszy dowód naszej wdzięczności dla tych wspaniałych ludzi, którzy odeszli w minionym tygodniu.
Módlmy się za dusze ofiar katastrofy: za Prezydenta RP Pana Lecha Kaczyńskiego, za Ostatniego Prezydenta RP na uchodźstwie Pana Ryszarda Kaczorowskiego, za Pana Macieja Płażyńskiego prezesa Wspólnoty Polskiej – patrona Polonii na całym świecie, także w Holandii, za Pana Stanisława Komorowskiego Wiceministra Obrony Narodowej, byłego Ambasadora RP w Holandii. Módlmy się za wszystkie ofiary katastrofy.

- Speech by HE Ambassador Janusz Stańczyk on the Solemn Mass celebrated in the commemoration of HE Lech Kaczyński, President of the Republic of Poland, and HE First Lady, Mrs. Maria Kaczyńska, as well as other victims of the tragic airplane crash at Smoleńsk on 10 April 2010

Ladies and Gentelman,
Dear Friends,
In the presence of our Dutch friends, the highest authorities and the diplomatic corps I would wish to be able to find proper words to express emotions that filled us, Poles, during the last few days since the tragic Saturday, 10 of April. Sadness, sorrow, disbelief, pain, despair – these words are not sufficient to describe what is going on in the hearts of people that come everyday to the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in The Hague to lay flowers and light candles. In silence they anonymously pay tribute witnessed by half-masted Polish flag – to President Lech Kaczyński, First Lady Maria Kaczyńska and other victims of the tragic catastrophe of the governmental airplane that crushed at Smoleńsk in Russia.
This tragedy took away 96 lives, that of the President of the Republic of Poland, Mr. Lech Kaczyński; His Spouse, Mrs. Maria Kaczyńska; Last President of the Republic of Poland in Exile, Mr. Ryszard Kaczorowski; two Vice-Speakers of Sejm; Vice-Speaker of Senate; Representatives of the Polish Armed Forces; Ombudsman; President of the National Bank; 18 Members of both Chambers of the Parliament; and more… People that were well known and respected in the Polish society: politicians, clergymen, civil servants. Also former Polish Ambassador to the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Stanisław Jerzy Komorowski, lost his life. They became all equal facing death. They all left their relatives deeply in pain and mourning. We express our deepest compassion and sympathy.
Tragedy at Smoleńsk has not only many personal dimensions but it is also a serious blow to the entire Polish Nation. Poland has been deprived of many of its leaders. The ones who died were among those whom we owe restoration of Polish democracy, who established major political parties, who were experienced and highly qualified servants of the public administration. On the list of victims there are also heroes of the 20th century struggle for freedom of Poland: Warsaw Upraising combatant Major Zbigniew Dębski and Solidarity Movement activist, Mrs. Anna Walentynowicz. Death of each of them alone would mark a painful date for the Polish Nation. Now, we lost all of them in one moment.
During past 20 years we, Poles, through hard and enduring work have built new Poland. Poland that our grandparents – fighting for freedom during World War II were longing for, that our parents – living under the communist oppression were dreaming of. Today, Poland is a democratic state having stable economy and playing an important role on the international scene. Polish Nation is ambitious and hardworking. We are happy that we can increase prosperity and build efficiently administrated country enjoying freedom and democracy.
Why then we are faced with this severe tragedy? Why the fate once again is challenging us in such a painful way?
Katyń. This is for Poles symbol of death since 1940. Since 1940 Polish people are trying to tell the world a story about the drama that happened to us there. Story of 22 thousands Polish officers and members of intellectual elite that were murdered by Soviet security forces. The goal of that intrigue, that led to mass killings, was to deprive Poland of its best leaders, intellectuals, persons respected by the society.
Those who might be surprised by a fact that the Crime from 70 years ago is so vividly present in the awareness of contemporary Poles may not realize that we are allowed to tell the truth about Katyń only since 1989. We craved that the world knows the truth. President Lech Kaczyński and other Members of the delegation that flew on Saturday to Smoleńsk to mark 70th Anniversary of the Katyń Massacre Commemorations were among those most devoted to this issue. On the 10th of April 2010 information on the Crime from 70 years ago was in the news all over the world. Thanks to that remembrance of this tragedy will stay with us forever.
President Lech Kaczyński during Saturday’s Commemoration ceremony on the Polish War Cemetery was planning to say: “We, Poles, do appreciate actions that Russians have undertaken during last years. This path, that is moving closer our two nations, should be followed without stopping or moving back”. Facing the tragedy, both Russian Federation’s authorities and Russian citizens fulfilled this unspoken wish of the President by offering Polish side great support – not only organizational and logistical but also the most important – spiritual one. We are thankful for that.
We would like to express our gratitude to the authorities of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Dutch society and media for all words of compassion and sympathy. In this time of mourning, which we can not share with our compatriots in Poland, these gestures of spiritual solidarity mean a lot to us. Thank you very much. Thank you also for those tulips “Maria Kaczyńska” that are present by the portrait of The First Lady.
The tragic catastrophe that happened at Smoleńsk on 10th of April 2010 will constitute forever one of the darkest pages of the Polish history and mystical symbol in Poland’s historiosophy.
Today we are paying tribute to the victims of the tragic airplane catastrophe and praying together for them. We will always honour their memory!

Ladies and Gentlemen! Dear Compatriots in the Netherlands!
Today here – away from the our Fatherland – in The Hague, we pay tribute to all victims of the tragedy: the President of the Republic of Poland – Lech Kaczyński, the First Lady, members of the parliament, the Polish Army commanders, heads of major state institutions, priests and relatives of officers murdered at Katyń in 1940. We join in prayer for them.
We are all shocked by the unimaginable tragedy suffered by our countrymen. It is hard to find the right words to express what we feel.
It’s hard for all of us realize that so many great, talented, righteous compatriots – have left us in a moment and at a spot so important for us Poles. What a tragic twist of history.
Our hearts are full of sorrow and pain. Each of us would now be in our country among our families – at home. Many of us raised a Polish flag and lit candles, laid flowers at the embassy and other places, prayed in Polish churches in the Netherlands.
Today, being together here, in The Hague, we want to find relief for our pain, joining in common prayer to God Almighty. Together with our guests – representatives of Her Majesty the Queen Beatrix, the Dutch government and parliament, the diplomatic corps and ordinary Dutch citizens – we want to pay tribute to victims of the disaster: former activists of “Solidarnosc” movement and patriots who in the service of homeland offered the highest possible price.
We feel the Dutch people are with us in this difficult time. A great spiritual support to us are the words of sympathy and compassion expressed in person, by phone, in e-mails, which many of us received not only from our Dutch families, friends, neighbours, but also from unknown Dutch people and citizens of other nationalities.
Our compatriot from Arnhem, told me about a meeting last Monday at his daughter’s school. One of the mothers bringing her children to school Natasha, a Russian from Moscow, spontaneously with tears offered her condolences to all Poles.
Last Sunday in front of the Polish Embassy I met a German, an inhabitant of The Hague, who attached on the fence a first page of the German newspaper with a photograph of the crashed plane carrying the title „Unser Nachbarland unter Schock. Polen, wir weinen mit Dir! („Our neighbour in shock. Poland, we cry with You!”). Among the sea of flowers near to the embassy, there were several special ones – two bouquets with a ribbon in Russian colours and flowers from our Hungarian friends.
To all of you, our friends: Dank u wel! Danke Schoen! Cпасибо!, Köszönöm szépen! Thank you!
I sincerely do hope that this spirit of community, solidarity and friendship will last – most of all in our homeland. That would be the most valuable proof of our gratitude for these wonderful people who left us last week.
Let us pray for the souls of the victims of the disaster: the Polish President – Mr Lech Kaczyński, the President of Poland in exile – Mr Ryszard Kaczorowski, Mr Maciej Płażyński – chairman of “Wspólnota Polska”, patron of Polish Community abroad, also in the Netherlands, Mr Stanisław Komorowski – Deputy Minister of Defence and former Polish Ambassador to the Netherlands and for all victims of the disaster.
